Garner State Park Concan, Texas

This was in Hill Country which is a beautiful part of Texas. Massive hills and green trees. Definitely not the flat lands most think about when thinking of Texas. It is one of the busiest state parks in all of Texas. If it hadn’t been 40 degrees and raining, I would have seen a lot more of it.

Corp of Engineer camping in Texas

I have stayed at 3 great COE campgrounds in the past couple of weeks and they continue to impress.

Kimble Bend just south of Ft. Worth near Hillsboro. No campground maps and hardly any people here. I had the rock hit my windshield on my way here.

Cedar Breaks near Burnet was very nice as well but hard to get a map of the place. However it was very close to where I was able to get a new windshield.

Potters Creek near Boerne was great but cold and raining. Good thing there was football on!

Waco Mammoth National Monument in Waco, Texas

My nephew recommended this to me and I am so glad I stopped. It’s an actual dig site that’s been enclosed. There’s a guided tour to the building by a ranger who gives you information about the discovery, the property owners’ donation, the city of Waco and national parks foundations working together to enclose the site and the current paleontologist who’s working at the site.

Pearl gets a present

Not exactly how I would like to have started out exploring more of Texas but a ROCK hitting my windshield had me scrambling to find a replacement quickly. I didn’t see what hit but believe me it sounded like a gunshot. Hidden behind my rear view mirror was a crack about the size of a tennis ball. As the days went on, there was an offshoot crack headed towards the dash on the passenger side. Safelite had a new windshield in 2 days and replaced with no problems on a rainy day.

Fun with Family

Three times is the charm and I was finally able to visit my nephew and his family near Ft. Worth, Texas. How they have the energy and patience to keep up with their kids I’ll never know. We had a great time and I only regret I didn’t get pictures with Matt and Max as they were in and out going to Baseball games.

Holiday Park campground on Benbrook Lake near Granbury, Texas

What a great campground! Another COE campground tucked away just outside Ft. Worth. I had a couple of quite days walking the park and I would have been on the water if the water levels were higher. The boat ramp I was near was dry from the road about 500 ft. Crazy to see all the hazards in the lake as well.

Dinosaur Valley SP near Paluxy, Texas

I was so excited to stay here and walk in Dinosaur tracks. However, with the river rising 15 ft in 3 days, they were under rushing water and not to be seen till next summer. I was also told all the trails were closed. Not a good start to my stay. But I did some exploring along the roads, found a dry trail and multiple information signs along the way.

Lakeside COE near Coleman, Texas

It always surprises me how nice the Corp of Engineer campgrounds are. Huge site, not many people were in my loop, and I was on the end so very peaceful. Watching the deer come in at dusk was a bonus.

Colorado City State Park, Texas

I wish the weather had been nicer while I was here. The wind, rain, and cold were hard to be outside in. Also, the trails were not very well maintained and looked to overgrown to be able to watch for snakes. I pretty much just chilled out and did research on routes to warmer weather. As big as this park is, I’m sure it’s extremely busy in the summer months. I was in my loop at site 23 by myself the 1st night and 2 other campers across the way the 2nd night.

Oswald Vineyard near Brownfield, Texas

This was a Harvest Hosts stay as I moved across Texas. Loved the fact they were harvesting the grapes while I was there. I always learn something new from staying at these locations. As well as meeting great people!
