East Bank COE near Sneads, Georgia

This is another one of my favorite places in Georgia. Sites are laid out well, very large and 2 loops offer water views. The first 2 days here the weather was pretty crappy but each day improved. I was also able to get a load of laundry done. No charge here for washer or dryer. Bonus!! This was done on a rain filled day, so I wasn’t the only one using the machines. What was great was talking with a woman who had volunteered in North Carolina after Hurricane Helene. Great stories about the people and all they worked to overcome. I had great neighbors as well!! Love meeting new people and listening to their stories. Two different neighbors brought me dinner. Both stopped by on my day of departure to say goodbye and wish me safe travels. I truly am blessed.

Fort Gaines part 2

The Fort Gaines museum was an unbelievable find! From the moment I walked in and was greeted by Cindy, I knew I was here for a couple of hours. Not only was there so much to take in, I was blessed with actual stories about most everything in here. The contents came from Sutton’s country store, established in 1848 and the doors were locked in 1929. In 1976 I believe,  a gentleman by the name of David Cambell purchased the store and all it contained. There were some negotiations with the  Historic society and the county to establish the museum and display the entire store. Eventually, Mr. Campbell sold everything to the Historic society. I highly recommend going and hopefully you get Cindy or another great volunteer to share the remarkable stories contained here. Be prepared to be blown away.

Fort Gaines part 1

My first exploration spot was Pioneer Village. I was blown away how well everything was kept up, signage was great, and you got a real sense of the commitment the Historic society here  has put into keeping their heritage alive. I found out later, there was a movie film crew here recently. Cool!

Hardridge Creek COE Campground near Fort Gaines, Georgia

This campground is near Fort Gaines but is actually in Alabama. I was here once before in the Pirate’s Cove loop. This trip, I was in the Bayshore area on site 12. My hope was to paddle board as there is a Bay that my site had access to. However, the current was so strong that I was not comfortable taking the board out. I saw canoes struggling to paddle upstream my first morning. So my first day was just relaxing and a little recovery from hiking Providence Canyon. The next day, I explored Fort Gaines. That will have to be a whole separate post as I found a couple of amazing places.

High Falls SP near Jackson, Georgia

This was a great time. When I first arrived, there were 4 families with at least 15 kids combined the age of 6. Another group had 5 kids a little older but they all played together in the center of the loop I was in. So much fun watching all the antics they got up to. Reminded me of when I was a kid and our vacations together with Aunts and Uncles and cousins. Come Sunday everyone was gone! Of course you know I was out hiking during the day. And the trails here are extremely well marked and scenery beautiful! I really enjoyed listening to the falls and smelling the wisteria.

Ocmulgee Mounds, Macon,  Georgia

This was a side trip that was amazing! I could have spent a lot more time here but it closes at 5pm. But I did get to explore a lot of the outside areas. Disappointed I didn’t get to the Funeral mound. That sounded really interesting with multiple layers from over 100 burials.   The visitors center was well laid out and the movie was very informative before venturing outside. I am planning to come back to spend more time both outside and in.
